Delivery: This workshop will be presented in four online Zoom sessions.
This event is co-sponsored by the Southern Ontario Training Group (SOTG) and Extend-A-Family Toronto.
As each session builds on previous sessions, participants are required to commit to all four sessions.
About the Workshop
This workshop presents a way of understanding the
lives of marginalized people. By examining social
devaluation, participants will learn about the impact
of wounding experiences on people with intellectual
and physical impairments, mental disorders, poverty,
and other conditions. To address this social
devaluation, the workshop will present ways to help
participants to start to think about how to assist
people to gain socially valued roles and have some of
the good things in life that most of us take for
granted.
The concepts introduced in this workshop are part of
Social Role Valorization, developed by Dr. Wolf
Wolfensberger, a prominent thinker and leader in
human services.
These Zoom sessions can be thought of as a
preliminary introduction to Social Role Valorization
(SRV). A more comprehensive introduction to SRV
theory is provided through an intensive four day inperson workshop which the Southern Ontario
Training Group will be offering again when it is safe
to do so.
Who Should Attend?
The workshop is intended for
the motivated learner who
wants to learn how to support
people who are devalued in our
society to have better lives.
This includes people who have
experienced devaluation
themselves, family members,
friends, paid and unpaid
supporters, advocates,
teachers, board members,
funders, policymakers, and
other interested parties.
Come prepared to listen, take
notes, frame and discuss your
questions. Also, come prepared
to think about the devalued
people you know, their life
experiences and the social roles
they fill in life. This workshop is
delivered via lecture, questions
and discussion.
