About Us: Who We Are

An association of family members, people with disabilities and interested community members, supporting people in Leeds and Grenville Counties who have an intellectual disability.

The Brockville and District Association for Community Involvement (BDACI or COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT) is a nonprofit, charitable organization founded by family members in 1956, to work with and on behalf of children and adults who are identified as having an intellectual disability along with their families.

We believe that all people should live in a state of dignity, share in all elements of living in the community and have the opportunity to participate effectively. We also believe that communities, families and government share in the responsibility of supporting and including citizens with an intellectual disability.

Better known as BDACI or COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT, we are a member of the Federation of Associations called Community Living Ontario. We are also affiliated with the Canadian Association for Community Living which represents over four hundred Associations across Canada.

Community Involvement provides support to people in Leeds and Grenville Counties who have an intellectual disability and their families. Read more about BDACI's history.

Association Outreach

Historically people with intellectual disabilities have been excluded from community life. They have been deprived of opportunities to live typical valued lifestyles and participate as contributing citizens. This history of exclusion is detrimental to people with intellectual disabilities, their families and the community.

BDACI's mission is to address that fundamental problem by implementing strategies to promote and foster community inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities in valued roles; support families so that they are less isolated; and address barriers to inclusion. This initiative consists of non-governmental support to people with intellectual disabilities and their families. It focuses on the development of strategies to address systemic issues including training, provision of resources for families, community members and partners. It strives to bring families together for networking and mutual benefit.

Activities Include:

  • Promoting an inclusive community
  • Family networking
  • Providing information about important issues
  • Providing resources for which no government funding is available
  • Providing educational opportunities for family members, people with disabilities, staff and community members
  • Connecting to the Community Living Federation provincially and nationally
  • Supporting association membership
  • Fundraising

Currently BDACI supports approximately 200 individuals and their families throughout Leeds and Grenville. We provide individualized support which enables people who have a disability to join in typical community life in valued roles, such as a YMCA member or an employee at a local restaurant. One important aspect of our work is helping families plan for the future and to that end, Legacy Supports and Community Involvement Legacy Homes have recently been established.

In addition to the 11 core staff who anchor the office, assist families, and organize family respite through our Program Connections: Respite with a purpose, BDACI employs approximately eighty support workers. These support workers are one of the important links into community life for people with intellectual disabilities.
